Cambodia, against evictions and in solidarity with BKL Housing Rights Defenders

Boeung Kak Lake under siege (2008-2012) For the past five years, the Boeung Kak Lake community has been fighting against the private developer that filled the lake with sand causing serious flooding in the surrounding villages and forcing more than 3500 families to leave because their homes became uninhabitable. On May a peaceful demonstration was violently dispersed and 15 women were arrested. An international call for solidarity.

Cambodia, Sign-on to support Boeung Kak lake community - Free the 15!

Thirteen women representatives from the Boeung Kak Lake community in the capital, Phnom Penh, were sentenced to up to two-and-a-half years in prison after a summary trial. Two more community representatives who were waiting outside the courthouse prepared to testify as witnesses for the 13 women on trial. A call for international solidarity: freedom for human rights defenders and justice for displaced inhabitants of Boeung Kak lake community

Derailed: Rehabilitation of the Cambodian Railway is Impoverishing more than 4.000 Families

Bridges Across Borders Cambodia has closely monitored the resettlement process and impacts of the GMS Rehabilitation of the Railways in Cambodia Project . The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is contributing $84 million in concessional loans and the Australian international aid agency AusAID is contributing $22.9 million in grants to this project, which stands to impact at more than 4000 families who live along the tracks.

La policía antidisturbios y el equipo de derribos del gobierno entran en conflicto con los residentes durante los derribos de chabolas en el pueblo de Corazón de Jesús, en la ciudad de San Juan (11 de enero de 2012). Según un estudio de Urban Poor Associates (UPA), defensor de los derechos de la vivienda, el año 2011 vio el mayor número de casos de desalojos documentados desde 1994. Desde enero a diciembre de 2011, un total de 14.744 familias, o 73.780 individuos, fueron desalojados en 39 incidentes. El 92 por ciento de los desalojos se consideran ilegales ya que no cumplen los requisitos recogidos en la ley de viviendas y desarrollo urbano. Siete derribos resultaron en violencia.

Thousands of landless squatters turned out in protest (Photo: Naresh Newar/IRIN) A Nepalese government development plan for Kathmandu could lead to violence as the authorities seek to evict some 40 squatter settlements with an estimated population of over 20,000 of landless squatters, the support group Lumanti say.  “We are ready to kill ourselves to stop government bulldozers. This is a life or death situation,” said Saru Magar, a landless squatter, who has been living at Bansighat settlement in the city centre for over 30 years.

Change can be happen only through a horrific change, when each of the building will be built with proper plan, if the in-city industries are relocated to a planned industrial zones, new residential areas will be built for the new comers, new parks, open spaces, play grounds will be created, roads will be wider, pollution will be reduced, then the city will be full of green.

Jornada Mundial del Hábitat, manifestación desde Mahim Phatak hasta Pila Bunglow en Dharavi (Bombay, 31 de octubre de 2011) Una nueva alianza integrada por organizaciones de habitantes instauró el Jornada Mundial del Hábitat. Alrededor de quinientas organizaciones populares presentaron un memorándum al Jefe de Gobierno del Estado en el que pidieron detener los desalojos forzados y promover el diálogo con las comunidades locales, las ONG y las organizaciones sociales para encontrar soluciones apropiadas a la crisis de vivienda en Bombay, en total conformidad con el Pacto Internacional sobre los Derechos Económicos, Sociales y Culturales. Con el fin de respaldar estos reclamos, se anunció la constitución de la Fuerza-Tarea Unitaria Anti-Desalojos, que incluirá a todos las partes interesadas
